The Case for the United Nations to Observe a Designated International Day Called Global Oneness Day

In these pivotal times, the United Nations emerges as the primary catalyst for fostering global unity, founded on the principles of oneness. Born out of the devastation of two world wars, the UN was established to promote peace, cooperation, and solidarity among nations. As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, marked by social, political, economic, and environmental challenges, the UN's mission of finding common ground through dialogue, global standards, and resolutions remains crucial.

It is proposed that Global Oneness Day would be commemorated on 25 October, the day after the UN celebrates the anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Charter on 24 October 1945. It would be observed each year beginning in 2025 honoring the landmark week of the founding of the United Nations and thereby recognizing the value of connectedness that exists among all people, all life, and the planet. It would also pay tribute to United Nations mission at large to maintain international peace and security by fostering a culture of peace, protecting human rights, advancing sustainable development and achieving international cooperation through the promotion of collaboration, dialogue, reconciliation and mutual understanding.

Aligning Global Oneness Day with the United Nations mission would further embed the principles of unity, interconnectedness and solidarity into global policies and actions, providing a broader worldwide platform to spread its message. This alignment is supported by key UN documents, including the UN Charter1, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights2, and the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace3.

Throughout the ages, countless spiritual traditions, philosophies, organizations and individuals have advanced the idea of the interconnectedness of humanity and oneness with all life.

More recently, Humanity's Team launched a Oneness Declaration Signature Drive in 2008 to help transform global interactions and perspectives. By 2010, over 52,000 signatures from 165 countries were collected, demonstrating a global readiness to embrace our united humanity and oneness. On May 20, 2010, Humanity's Team's Global Council visited United Nations Headquarters in New York and presented these signatures and a proposal for Global Oneness Day to Ambassador Anwarul K. Chowdhury. The ceremony which was co-sponsored with the NGO Committee on Spirituality, Values and Global Concerns (NY), a committee of the Conference of NGOs in consultative relationship with the United Nations took place in front of the Chagall Window next to the UN Meditation Room. Ambassador Chowdhury emphasized the importance of solidarity and suggested that Humanity's Team launch Global Oneness Day celebrations all over the world and return to the UN after establishing global support. For 15 years Global Oneness Day has been celebrated worldwide, and now we are returning to the UN to seek its official recognition, believing that oneness and solidarity can propel the UN's SDGs on the same basis of solidarity and oneness worldwide.

Partnering with the NGO Committee on Spirituality, Values, and Global Concerns (NY), and supported by Ambassador Chowdhury, Humanity's Team focused on building civil society momentum for official UN recognition. Celebrated initially on October 24th, 2010, coinciding with United Nations Day, Global Oneness Day has evolved into a significant annual event, dedicated to awakening and celebrating our interconnectedness. It has expanded from a single-day teleconference to a multi-day virtual and live events, highlighting a growing global consciousness and commitment to unity and oneness. Global Oneness Day underscores our interconnectedness, supported by scientific discoveries like quantum entanglement. This interconnectedness is mirrored in our ecosystem, affirming unity as a tangible reality.

Aligning Global Oneness Day with the UN's mission to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity, would further embed the principles of unity into global policies and actions, providing a broader worldwide platform to spread its message. This alignment is supported by key UN documents, including the UN Charter4, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights5, the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace6, and global goals such as the Millennium Development Goals7 (MDGs) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This special day would highlight the connection between oneness, a culture of peace and global solidarity.

In conclusion, a UN commemorated Global Oneness Day would symbolize a collective commitment to the well-being of humanity, grounded in oneness and all life. Establishing this day would create a profound legacy of oneness and mark a pivotal step toward global cooperation. It invites every individual to join in the transformative journey toward a more compassionate, interconnected, and sustainable world. Embracing our oneness can usher in an era where humanity transcends conflict, ensures universal access to essentials, promotes balanced resource use, and ends poverty and social injustice. This legacy would honor the founding principles of the United Nations and inspire current and future generations to build a harmonious and flourishing global community for all.
